Zora Neale Hurston’s novel highly praised novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, was once denounced by many critics because it was categorized as a feminist novel. However, through further analyzation, the novel is now viewed simply as a protagonist developing a feminist conscience throughout her marriages. Zora Neale Hurston was born in Natasulga, Alabama on January 7, 1891. Mrs. Hurston was the fifth of eight children to John Hurston, a carpenter and Baptist preacher, and Lucy Potts Hurston, a former schoolteacher. At a young age, Zora Neale Hurston relocated with her family and moved to the nation’s first incorporated black town, Eatonville, Florida. In Eatonville, Hurston was a privileged young woman living in an eight bedroom house on five acres of land. In this city, Hurston was capable of seeing the â€Å"black achievement† at its best. Zora was often recognized as the rambunctious child, despite her recurring run-ins as being the preacher’s daughte r (The Official Website of). In 1904, Zora’s picturesque lifestyle came to an end. At the age of 13, Hurston’s lost her mother, and in the same year was forced to leave school to take care of her brother’s children. Soon after, Hurston’s father married Mattie Moge, a young woman six years older than Zora. In 1917, at the age of 26, Zora Neale Hurston left home and disguised herself as a 16 year old and moved to Baltimore, Maryland to continue her education at a high school level. Khaled Hosseini s The Kite Runner Essay â€Å"And suddenly Hassan’s voice whispered in my head: For you, a thousand times over† (Hosseini 2).Khaled Hosseini’s powerful and impacting fictional book, The Kite Runner, has opened the eyes of millions of readers around the world. In the most realistic way, he integrated a portion of his life into a book that has become an international bestseller and beloved classic, and it is sold in at least seventy countries. Hosseini was born in Kabul, Afghanistan in a family whose father was a diplomat in the Afghan Foreign Ministry, mother who taught Farsi and history at a high school in Kabul, and a Hazara man who worked for his family for a couple of years. The Foreign Ministry then moved the Hosseini family to Paris, but when they were ready to return back to Kabul, there was a bloody communist coup and an invasion by the Soviet Army. While practicing medicine as an internist, Khaled Hosseini wrote The Kite Runner, which encompassed the extraordinary life of a Pashtun boy, named Amir, who transformed from being selfish to being a mature, selfless, and redeemed man. The book was introduced with a haunting flashback memory that dated back twenty-seven years ago from the mid-1970s to the early 2000s. One day Amir received a phone call from Rahim Khan, an old friend, telling him â€Å"here is a way to be good again† (Hosseini 2). Tragic, dramatic, and regretful sins that have been hidden in the depths of Amir’s guilty heart, led him to search for redemption. However, did Amir really want to help himself?Amir grew up in a wealthy house with a complicated past: a mother who died giving birth to him, a family servant’s son, Hassan, who turned out to be his one and only loyal friend, and a father, Baba, who favored Hassan more openly than h. . ped up. It was not until Amir was suffocating with these haunting memories had he searched for redemption. Amir owed his life to Hassan, but since he is not physically alive, he dedicated his life in taking care of Sohrab. The symbolism of the scar left on Amir’s lip after the fight with Assef, signifies that the memories of Hassan are still there, but the guilt is slowly being relieved and forgiven. The road to redemption was taken on a personal level being put â€Å"in the shoes of characters who are radically different than they are† (qtd. in Milvy). The way Amir treated Hassan was due to their social class difference as well as for Amir’s immaturity. It was after realizing all the cruel deeds he had done was the time for Amir to repay, to forgive, and to find redemption. â€Å"And that, I believe, is what true redemption is, when guilt leads to good† (Hosseini 302).

Mattimeo Mattimeo Setting: The story takes place in Mossflower, a forested area where the animals of Redwall live. It takes place in fantasy times. There are no humans, just animals roam the earth. The Main Characters: The main characters are Mattimeo who is the son of the great warrior mouse of Redwall, Matthias. Matthais is the great warrior of Redwall whose son has been taken captive by Slagar the Cruel. Jess squirrel is a normal Redwall inhabitant whose son has also been taken by Slagar. Orlando the Ax is a huge badger and his daughter Jube has been captured by Slagar. The last main character, Basil Stag Hair, is a veteran foot fighter rabbit who has an enormous appetite. Summary: This is a story of a boy becoming a man. It is told through animals and fantasy. It starts with the animals of Redwall having a peaceful celebration of the new season. Slagar and his evil henchmen came to the celebration disguised as entertainers. They spiked the animals' drinks with a sleeping potion and kidnapped all of the children of Redwall, including Mattimeo, son of the great warrior mouse Matthias. When they awaken they send out a search party to find the children. Matthias, Jess, and Basil discover the trail of the missing children. On their way they met Orlando the Ax who was also looking for his daughter, Jube. They found out that Slagar was kidnapping children and taking them as slaves in a slave train to an unknown realm. They finally caught up to Slagar and were going to rescue their children but were fooled into going into a cave. Slagar then dumped huge rocks over the entrance to the cave. It took the animals days to get out of the cave. Slagar took the slaves to an underground kingdom where they would work for an evil ruler. The slaves were then put in a cell without anything to eat or drink. Matthias and his companions thought they had lost their children forever because they couldnt find an entrance to the underground kingdom. Finally, while sitting on a rock, the rock slid away to reveal a staircase into the ground. They went down the staircase and then were attacked by rats. By mistake they found the children who joined with Matthias in fighting the rats. At the end they defeated the rats and the evil emperor. They went home and Mattimeo had finally after experiencing these events become a man. He took over his fathers place as the warrior of Redwall. Impression: I really liked this book because of all its suspense. The author kept my attention constantly. For example, in the book the author would cut off right at a very suspenseful part and switch to another part. From a scale of one to ten I would give this book a ten. I recommend it to whoever likes fast moving stories and suspense.
